Hedge Trimming

Hedge Trimming

Why do you want to trim the tops of tall trees? I can think of one reason to do so and there are several reasons not to do so.

If you want to “top” the tree, you are going to send it into a growth pattern from which the tree will never recover. If you remove the upward growing branch, or leader, the tree effectively loses it direction. It will develop several if not many new leaders and make the tree dangerously top heavy. You will achieve exactly the opposite of what you intended to do.

Tall trees on your property are a beautiful source of shade, privacy and wind protection. Not only that, they improve the value of your home and serve as a kind of status symbol. Large, old trees on a property are a sure sign of prosperity. Having trees, however, also requires a good deal of maintenance and care, and the larger the trees, the more difficult that care will be.

Tall trees are magnificent structures that provide ample shade, as well as a large habitat for many varieties of animals. Like all trees, tall trees must be trimmed and pruned occasionally to keep them in optimal health, and also for safety reasons. If one of the tree’s limbs dies or becomes too heavy, it could break away from the trunk, causing injury to near persons and damage to property. While it is recommended that you hire a tree-trimming company to deal with extensive tree trimming for safety reasons, you can perform small pruning tasks yourself.

While many tasks involved in your landscaping can be undertaken yourself, the trimming of larger trees should be left to a professional tree trimming service. Cutting away dead wood, and the pruning of branches on a taller tree will involve climbing into the tree, which can be dangerous if not performed a trained professional.

As the winter ends and days get longer, the sun shines warmer, our bushes and shrubs grow bigger and need some maintenance so they don’t get out of control and cover your windows and doors. Hedge trimming requires the use of manual or electric clippers to snip leaves and branches that have outgrown their welcome to make your bushes look unruly and unkept.

Not only can unruly hedges devalue your property, the right styling can provide your own natural oasis while enhancing the yard’s trees, gardens, lawns, and hardscapes like patios, stairs, stonewalls, and sidewalks.

When trimmed regularly, hedges can be formed into fences that line your property and there are many perennial options that remain green year-round.

Landscaping trees add beauty and value to your property, and maintenance is essential to protect that value. If you’re tempted to skip regular tree-trimming services, take a moment to consider all the reasons you shouldn’t.

Tree Appearance

Trees that aren’t regularly trimmed can grow to look unbalanced and misshapen. Branches may sprout off in strange directions and this uneven growth can make your trees appear bedraggled.

Landscape Aesthetics

When you don’t regularly trim trees, the aesthetics of your landscape can be affected.

Tree Health

Overgrowth negatively affects the health of a tree. Without trimming, trees can become weaker and will be less likely to survive.

Safety

Property safety is another important reason regular tree trimming is necessary.

If you’re convinced that regular tree trimming is a must, hire a certified local arborist for the job. An arborist will give your trees the best possible care and ensure that they continue to grow strong and beautiful for many years to come.

If you have any tall trees in your home garden or property, you should know that they improve the appearance, protect against heavy winds, provide security, and lovely shade. However, the bigger a tree is, the more it requires to be maintained and looked after.

Trimming long trees is not an easy job, and you have to take care of a lot of things before you proceed with this task. Collect all the equipment beforehand so that you don’t lag while trimming.

Removing branches for power line clearance, satellite line-of-sight, or to “improve” your view, is best left to an experienced arborist who will know how/what to remove to mitigate adverse, if not dangerous, growth.

You may have heard of pollarding which is a pruning system involving the removal of the upper branches of a tree that promotes the growth of a dense head of foliage and branches. Doing so, destines you forever to keep pruning it. It is best done on a tree that is naturally small so that future work is manageable.

Before you get started on the job, it’s best practices to review your work area for debris and other impediments. Hedge trimmers are an amazing device that exponentially expedite the efficiency of yard work but they can be very dangerous. Their sharp clippers can easily sever a bodily appendage and you must be very observant of where the clippers are. You should only be activating the clippers when you’re ready to cut branches.

Some tree-trimming companies make use of spurs (also called climbing gaffs) to access the tops of trees. These are metal spikes that attach to a tree workers leg and assist them in climbing up and down. While this may be alright if you are climbing a tree that you are preparing to cut down, it is not a safe practice for trees that are only being trimmed.

Whenever you are trimming a tree, first cut and remove all harmed and flawed parts of the tree. Use your pruning scissors, and pole saws to cut off ailing, weak, dead branches and stems.

This is important for both the health of the tree and for the safety of people who live near the tree or walk close to the tree regularly.
